Updated October 2026. This is a practical guide to booking a shipping container to Dubai as a full container load: where it can come from, how long it takes, what duty you pay and how to keep port charges at zero.
Full Container Load (FCL) Import into Dubai
Need a shipping container to Dubai every month, not just once? In that case, Delta Global books full containers only into the UAE. We handle the booking at origin, the paperwork, customs clearance in Dubai and delivery to your warehouse. You get one contact from the supplier’s gate to your door.
Container Shipping to Dubai for Regular Importers
This page is for traders, distributors and factories that already import by sea. You know your supplier and your product. Above all, what you want is a forwarder that books on time, gets the papers right and keeps your containers out of storage.
That is exactly our work. We are a Dubai freight forwarder with our head office in Al Sabkha Tower. We also run our own offices in China, Türkiye (Bursa), Germany (Hamburg), Kabul and Herat. As a result, the people who book your container at origin answer to the same company that clears it in Dubai.
Looking to buy an empty container rather than ship one? See our container trading page.
Where We Ship Full Containers to Dubai From
China
Our own China office works with suppliers in the main export regions. From there, containers sail from Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Qingdao and other main ports.
China sourcing & shipping →Türkiye
Our Bursa office collects from factories across Türkiye. Then containers load at Mersin, Ambarlı, Gemlik or Aliağa.
FCL Türkiye to Dubai →Germany & Europe
Our Hamburg office books from Hamburg and Bremerhaven. It also collects from suppliers in the rest of the EU.
FCL Germany to Dubai →India, Pakistan & the rest of Asia
Short sea lanes from Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Karachi, plus Southeast Asia. For these, we book through our carrier and agent network.
Ask for a quote →USA, UK & the Americas
Longer lanes, usually with one transhipment. Therefore, we quote them case by case once we know the origin city.

For example, these are typical port-to-port windows for a shipping container to Dubai and the rest of the UAE. Door-to-door takes longer, because collection, customs and delivery add time at both ends.

- Commercial invoicevalue, currency, Incoterm and HS codes
- Packing listpackages, weights and measurements
- Certificate of originneeded for clearance and for any trade-agreement duty saving
- Delivery orderissued by the shipping line in Dubai once its charges are paid
- Importer’s trade licence and customs codethe goods clear under the importer’s Dubai Customs registration
- Permits for controlled goodsfor example food, cosmetics, chemicals or telecom items
In addition, commercial invoices of AED 10,000 or more for mainland imports need attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, free-zone and transit imports are exempt. For more detail, see our customs clearance in Dubai guide.
UAE Customs Duty and VAT on Imported Containers
Most goods entering the UAE mainland pay 5% customs duty on the CIF value. In other words, CIF means the goods plus insurance plus freight to the UAE port. On top of that, 5% VAT is charged on the CIF value plus the duty.
There are exceptions. Some foodstuffs and raw materials are exempt, while alcohol and tobacco pay much more. In addition, goods of GCC origin usually enter duty free. The UAE also has trade agreements, such as the CEPA with India, that can lower the duty when you hold the right certificate of origin.
Finally, where the goods go matters. Goods entering a free zone or passing through in transit do not pay UAE duty at that point. Therefore, decide the entry type before the container sails, not after it lands.
Free Time, Demurrage and Detention at Jebel Ali
Every line gives a set number of free days once your shipping container lands in Dubai. After that, however, two daily charges start.
So how do you keep these at zero? First, use a telex release or sea waybill so you are not waiting for paper originals. Next, send us the documents before the ship arrives. Finally, if you ship every month, ask us about extra free days at the port.
Clearance and Container Transport in Dubai
Once customs releases the container, we book a truck from the port to your warehouse in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or a free zone. You can then unload at your site, and afterwards we return the empty. Alternatively, the goods can be unloaded into a bonded or free-zone warehouse run by a licensed operator. Also, tell us your unloading address and opening hours when you book, so that the truck arrives on the right day.
Re-Export and Transit: Dubai as Your Hub
Many containers that reach Jebel Ali are not for the UAE at all. Instead, the goods move on to the GCC, Afghanistan or Central Asia. In that case a transit or re-export entry avoids paying UAE duty on goods that only pass through.
In fact, Afghanistan and Central Asia are our core lanes, with our own offices in Kabul and Herat. See our pages for Dubai to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. If the goods need to change containers on the way, we arrange cross stuffing in Dubai.
What Decides Your Container Rate to Dubai
We do not publish rates for a shipping container to Dubai, because ocean freight moves every week. Instead, these are the things that set your price:
- Origin port and routingdirect sailing or transhipment, and the port of discharge in the UAE
- Container type and weightreefers and special boxes cost more, and heavy loads may need a 20ft
- Volume and regularityregular monthly volume helps us plan space and equipment
- Incotermwho pays which leg; see our Incoterms guide
- Commodity and HS codethese decide duty, permits and any special handling
- Delivery addressport pick-up, a Dubai warehouse, or onward transit

Shipping Container to Dubai: Common Questions
Transit, duty and charges
How long does it take to ship a container to Dubai?
Port to port, plan on about 4 to 7 days from India, 18 to 25 days from China, 18 to 28 days from Germany and 24 to 34 days from Türkiye. Add a few days for customs clearance and delivery to your warehouse. Routings change often in 2026, so we confirm the current window when we quote.
What import duty do I pay on a container into Dubai?
Most goods pay 5% customs duty on the CIF value under the GCC common tariff, plus 5% VAT. Some goods are exempt or pay a lower rate, and a valid certificate of origin can cut the duty under a UAE trade agreement. Send us the HS code and we check it before you ship.
What is the difference between demurrage and detention?
Demurrage is charged while your full container stays at the port after the free days run out. Detention is charged while you keep the shipping line's container outside the port, for example at your warehouse, beyond its free days. Both are daily charges set by the carrier.
How do I track my container to Jebel Ali?
You can check your container on the shipping line's website with the container or bill of lading number. We also send you the key milestones ourselves: departure, arrival notice, delivery order, customs release and delivery.
Re-export, volume and quotes
Can my container go on to Afghanistan or Central Asia without paying UAE duty?
Yes, in most cases. Goods that only pass through the UAE can move under a transit or re-export declaration instead of a full import, so UAE duty is not paid. We set this up before the container arrives.
Do you ship part loads or small boxes?
No. We only handle full containers, with a minimum of one 20ft container. That focus lets us plan space and equipment properly for importers who ship every month.
What should I send you for a fast quote?
Send the origin city and port of loading, container type and how many per month, the commodity, the HS code if you know it, the Incoterm and the ready date. We usually reply the same business day.
