FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan — FCL & LCL Sea-Road Freight via the Iranian Transit Corridors

Delta Global Cargo moves freight from India to Afghanistan on the only routings that actually work: sea freight from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Kandla to Mersin in Türkiye — the routing we currently lead with — or to Chabahar or Bandar Abbas, then overland to Herat, Kabul, Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif. There is no working direct land route for Indian exports, so getting this lane right is entirely about choosing the correct transit corridor. We hold our own offices in Dubai, Kabul and Herat — one team at the Afghan end, whichever corridor your container takes.

How We Route India–Afghanistan: FCL Direct, LCL via Our Dubai Hub

These are two different services with two different transit times, and it matters which one you actually need.

FCL — loaded direct from India

If you have a full container we load it direct from India — no transhipment through a third country and no re-handling of your goods. It moves via Bandar Abbas or Mersin and then overland to the Afghan border.

Indicative transit: 3–5 weeks to Islam Qala (the Herat crossing), then onward to Kabul, Kandahar or Mazar-i-Sharif.

LCL — consolidated through Dubai

For part loads there is no direct Indian consolidation into Afghanistan. Your goods come to Jebel Ali, Dubai, where we receive them into our own warehouse and load them into our own shared container for Afghanistan.

Indicative transit: 40–60 days from the UAE, depending on how quickly the shared container fills and on border conditions — it can run shorter or longer.

Either way the Afghan end is ours: our own offices in Herat and Kabul handle customs clearance and final delivery. If you also buy from China or Turkey, the Dubai consolidation is an advantage — we combine all of it into one onward shipment instead of you paying three separate lanes.

The Real Constraint

Why FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan Has No Direct Route

Afghanistan is landlocked and India does not border it. In practice, overland transit for Indian export freight across Pakistan is not a route you can book, so every commercial shipment from India reaches Afghanistan by sea to a transit port, then by road. Anyone quoting you a simple point-to-point rate without naming the transit port has not planned the shipment yet.

Corridor 1 — Mersin (our current preference)Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Kandla → Mersin, Türkiye → overland by TIR to the Afghan border → Herat, Kabul, Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif. This joins our established Türkiye–Afghanistan TIR service, so the overland leg runs on a corridor we already operate with our own arrangements rather than one we buy in per shipment. This is the routing we lead with today — we still price the others below so you can see the trade-off.
Corridor 2 — ChabaharMundra or Nhava Sheva → Chabahar (Shahid Beheshti Terminal) → Zaranj → Delaram Highway → Kandahar, Kabul, Herat. Purpose-built for Afghan transit and the shortest sea leg from western India. Chabahar also sits on the Gulf of Oman, outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Corridor 3 — Bandar AbbasNhava Sheva or Mundra → Bandar Abbas → Islam Qala border → Herat, then onward to Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif. More services, more space and more frequent sailings than Chabahar, at the cost of a longer inland leg.
Corridor 4 — Jebel Ali transhipmentIndia → Jebel Ali (UAE) → onward to Afghanistan on our existing Dubai–Afghanistan service. This is our own hub, so consolidation, re-working and LCL builds all happen under our control instead of at a third-party depot.
Air corridor — urgent freight onlyDelhi or Mumbai to Kabul and Kandahar by air for pharmaceuticals, samples and time-critical spares. Priced per kilo, not per container — worth it only when the value density justifies it.

Which corridor is cheapest changes with sailing schedules, Iranian inland haulage rates and border conditions. We price at least two of them on every enquiry rather than defaulting to one.

How Long Does FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan Take?

Indicative door-to-port transit from an Indian loading point to the Afghan destination city, combining the sea leg and the Iranian road leg. Border conditions and vessel schedules move these figures, so exact transit is confirmed at booking.

Freight Options

Container Options for India to Afghanistan Freight

We move both FCL and LCL shipments from India to Afghanistan. On a lane where the inland leg is priced per container, container choice affects your landed cost more than it does on a straight port-to-port sailing.

20ft Dry Container

33 CBM capacity. The workhorse for dense India–Afghanistan freight — tiles, machinery parts, chemicals and packaged foodstuffs up to roughly 28 tonnes.

40ft Dry Container

67 CBM capacity. Standard choice for general merchandise and mixed consignments where weight is not the limiting factor.

40ft High Cube

76 CBM with an extra 30cm of ceiling height. Best value per cubic metre on this lane, because the Iranian road leg is charged per container rather than per CBM.

20ft Reefer

Temperature-controlled for pharmaceuticals, food and any freight with a cold-chain requirement. Plug availability at the transit port must be confirmed before booking.

Open Top & Flat Rack

For over-height and over-width freight — plant, structural steel, transformers. Out-of-gauge moves need the road leg surveyed in advance, and we do that before quoting.

LCL Consolidation

Part loads consolidated at Nhava Sheva or through our Jebel Ali hub. Sensible below roughly 12–15 CBM; above that a full 20ft is usually cheaper.
Destinations

Afghan Cities We Serve from India

Every Afghan destination is reached from the same Iranian transit corridors — what changes is the length of the inland leg. Our own offices in Kabul and Herat handle the Afghan end.

Herat

The natural first stop for Indian freight arriving through Iran — closest major Afghan city to both the Islam Qala and Zaranj crossings. Delta Global has its own office in Herat.

Indicative transit: 14–20 days

Kabul

The capital and the largest commercial market. Our Kabul office handles import clearance and final delivery.

Indicative transit: 18–24 days

Kandahar

Best served through Chabahar and the Zaranj–Delaram highway, which is the shortest road distance of any Afghan city from an Indian-served port.

Indicative transit: 13–19 days

Mazar-i-Sharif

Northern commercial hub, reached onward from Herat. Add roughly a week over the Herat figure.

Indicative transit: 20–26 days

Jalalabad

Eastern Afghanistan, delivered onward from Kabul. Practical for consignees in Nangarhar province.

Indicative transit: 20–26 days

All Afghan Provinces

Onward delivery to any provincial capital is arranged from our Kabul and Herat offices. Tell us the final address and we quote it as one movement.

Quoted per destination
Why Delta Global

Why Choose Delta Global for FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan?

This corridor punishes forwarders who only control one end of it. Delta Global Cargo has run Afghan freight since 2011 with its own offices at the destination.

Own Offices in Dubai, Kabul & Herat

Most forwarders quoting India–Afghanistan hand your container to an agent the moment it leaves the ship. We have our own people in Kabul and Herat, so the Afghan end of the movement is ours, not a subcontractor’s.

We Price More Than One Corridor

Mersin, Chabahar, Bandar Abbas and Jebel Ali transhipment are all live options with different costs and transit times. We quote at least two on every enquiry so you can see the trade-off instead of taking one number on trust.

Indian Export Documentation

Shipping Bill, commercial invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin and IEC details checked before the container gates in — the paperwork errors on this lane are almost always at the Indian end, and they cost days at the transit port.

Iranian Transit Handled

The inland leg through Iran is the part of this lane that goes wrong. We arrange the transit haulage and the border formalities rather than leaving them to be discovered at Bandar Abbas.

Real Tracking, Not Guesswork

Vessel position, discharge, transit clearance and the road leg — you get told where the box actually is, including the days it spends waiting, which is the part most updates leave out.

Itemised, Not Headline, Pricing

Sea freight, transit port handling, Iranian inland haulage and border charges quoted as separate lines. If a competitor’s number is lower, this shows you exactly where.

Commodities

Common Commodities & Indicative HS Codes — India to Afghanistan

PharmaceuticalsHS Chapter 30 — one of India’s largest exports to Afghanistan. Often moves by air or reefer.
Textiles & apparelHS Chapters 52, 61–63 — cotton fabric, made-ups and garments.
Machinery & partsHS Chapter 84 — pumps, generators, agricultural and industrial machinery.

ChemicalsHS Chapters 28–29 and 32–34 — industrial chemicals, dyes and cleaning products.
Building materialsHS Chapters 68–69 and 72–73 — tiles, ceramics, sanitaryware and steel products.

Indicative only — we help confirm the correct classification for your specific goods before booking, because a wrong HS code on a transit corridor is discovered at a border, not at origin.

Container Shipping to Afghanistan — 20ft, 40ft and 40HC

Afghanistan is landlocked. There is no Afghan seaport and no vessel sails to Kabul. Every container shipment to Afghanistan is therefore a two-part move: sea freight to a transit port, then overland to the border. Anyone quoting you a simple port-to-port container rate has not priced the half that actually costs money.

How a container physically reaches Afghanistan from India

Your container is loaded at Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Kandla and sails to Mersin, or to Bandar Abbas or Chabahar, then moves overland to the Afghan border. From there it clears at Islam Qala (for Herat) or Hairatan / Torkham depending on the destination city, and we deliver inland to Kabul, Kandahar or Mazar-i-Sharif.

Which container size to book

  • 20ft container — the workhorse on this route. Best for dense cargo, and easier to handle at the border crossings and on Afghan roads.
  • 40ft container — better cost per cubic metre for volume cargo, but check the inland leg first: not every Afghan destination handles a 40ft trailer comfortably.
  • 40ft high cube (40HC) — the extra foot of height pays for itself on light, bulky goods.
  • Shared container (LCL) — if you do not fill a box, you go into our own consolidation, not a stranger’s.

What decides the real cost

Sea freight is the visible number. The ones that decide your landed cost are the transit-port handling, the overland leg, border clearance, and detention and demurrage if the container sits while paperwork catches up. We quote all of it as one figure, because a container stuck at Bandar Abbas accruing demurrage is how these shipments actually lose money.

Tell us the commodity, the volume and the destination city and we will tell you honestly whether a 20ft, a 40ft or a shared load is the cheaper way to move it.

Border Crossings and Delivery Inside Afghanistan

Most freight forwarders quoting India–Afghanistan stop at the border and hand your goods to a local agent they have never met. We are a shipping company with our own offices in Herat and Kabul, so the Afghan end — customs clearance, border formalities and onward movement — is handled by our own people, on one invoice and one point of contact. Final delivery arrangements are agreed per shipment, so you know before you book exactly where your goods are handed over.

The border crossings we clear through

  • Islam Qala — from Iran, the main crossing for Herat and western Afghanistan
  • Nimroz (Zaranj) — from Iran via Chabahar, the shortest road run toward Kandahar and the south
  • Farah — from Iran, serving Farah province and the south-west
  • Torkham — from Pakistan, for Jalalabad and Kabul
  • Hairatan — from Uzbekistan, for Mazar-i-Sharif and the north
  • Aqina — from Turkmenistan, for Faryab and the north-west

Which crossing your shipment uses is a cost decision, not a formality. We price more than one where the choice is real, instead of routing everything through whichever border we happen to use most.

Full container, shared container or part load

For LCL and part loads from India there is no direct Indian consolidation into Afghanistan — your goods come to our Jebel Ali warehouse and go into our own shared container for Afghanistan. Whether you move a full container load or a single pallet, the Afghan end is handled by the same team.

The India–Afghanistan Freight Route — Step by Step

A shipment from India to Afghanistan is two movements sold as one: an ocean leg to an Iranian port and a road leg across the border. Understanding where one ends and the other begins is how you read a quote on this lane properly.

Step 1 — Loading & Export Clearance in India

Freight is loaded at your factory or a CFS at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Kandla/Deendayal, Chennai or Kolkata. The Shipping Bill is filed and Indian export clearance is completed before the container gates in. This is where most delays on this lane originate — a document error found here costs hours; the same error found at the transit port costs days.

Step 2 — Sea Leg to the Transit Port

The container sails to Mersin in Türkiye, which is the routing we currently lead with, or to Chabahar (Shahid Beheshti Terminal) or Bandar Abbas. Chabahar is the shorter sea leg from western India and sits outside the Strait of Hormuz; Bandar Abbas has more frequent sailings and more space. We confirm which port before booking, not after.

Step 3 — Discharge & Transit Formalities

The box is discharged and placed under transit for the road leg into Afghanistan. Waiting time here is real and it is a cost — it is the line most quotes leave out, which is why we show it separately.

Step 4 — Road Leg Through Iran

From Chabahar the route runs to Zaranj and onto the Delaram highway toward Kandahar and Kabul. From Bandar Abbas it runs to the Islam Qala crossing and into Herat. Both legs are priced per truck, which is why container size matters so much on this lane.

Step 5 — Afghan Clearance & Delivery

Our Kabul or Herat office handles import clearance and final delivery to the consignee’s address, or hands over to your own clearing agent if you prefer. Either way, you are told which before the freight moves.

Chabahar or Bandar Abbas — Choosing the Transit Port

This is the single decision that most affects the cost and the transit time of freight from India to Afghanistan. Neither port is universally better.

Road leg into AfghanistanZaranj → Delaram → Kandahar / KabulIslam Qala → Herat → onward

PositionGulf of Oman — outside the Strait of HormuzInside the Strait of Hormuz

That last row matters more than it used to. When the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted, Chabahar keeps working and Bandar Abbas does not — which is why we keep both corridors open rather than defaulting to one.

FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan: FAQ

How long does freight from India to Afghanistan take?

Indicative door-to-port transit is 14–20 days to Herat, 13–19 days to Kandahar via Chabahar, and 18–24 days to Kabul. The figure combines the sea leg to an Iranian port and the road leg into Afghanistan, and is confirmed at booking.

Can freight go overland from India to Afghanistan?

Not in practice. Overland transit across Pakistan is not a route commercial shippers can book, so all freight from India to Afghanistan moves by sea to a transit port — Mersin in Türkiye, or Chabahar or Bandar Abbas in Iran — and then by road. We currently lead with Mersin.

Which is better, Chabahar or Bandar Abbas?

Chabahar has the shorter sea leg from western India and the shorter road distance to Kandahar, and it sits outside the Strait of Hormuz. Bandar Abbas has more sailings and more space, and suits Herat, Kabul and the north. We price both.

Do you handle Afghan customs clearance?

Yes. Our Kabul and Herat offices handle Afghan import clearance and final delivery, or we hand over to your own clearing agent — whichever you specify at booking.

What documents do I need to export from India to Afghanistan?

Commercial invoice, packing list, Shipping Bill, the exporter’s IEC, Certificate of Origin where required, and the Bill of Lading. We prepare the transit documentation for the Iranian leg.

Can I ship LCL from India to Afghanistan?

Yes. Part loads are consolidated at Nhava Sheva or through our Jebel Ali hub. Below roughly 12–15 CBM, LCL is usually cheaper; above that a full 20ft normally wins because the inland road leg is priced per container.

How Much Does FCL Shipping from India to Afghanistan Cost?

This lane is priced as two legs, and a quote that shows only one total is hiding where your money goes. Your rate depends on:

  • Transit corridor — Chabahar, Bandar Abbas or transhipment through our Jebel Ali hub.
  • Container size — the Iranian road leg is charged per truck, so a 40ft high cube is usually far better value per CBM than a 20ft.
  • Load type — FCL versus LCL consolidation.
  • Destination city — Herat, Kandahar, Kabul or Mazar-i-Sharif, and how far past it the final delivery is.
  • Transit port waiting time — real, variable, and the line most quotes omit.
  • Customs — Indian export clearance plus Afghan import clearance.

Because sea rates, Iranian haulage and border conditions all move independently, we quote each shipment individually and show the legs separately. Delta Global Cargo has operated since 2011 with its own offices in Dubai and Kabul & Herat — one team at the difficult end of the corridor.

India to Afghanistan — Quick Answers

What is the fastest way to ship freight from India to Afghanistan?

For containerised freight, Mundra to Kandahar via Chabahar is typically the fastest at an indicative 13–19 days. For genuinely urgent, high-value consignments such as pharmaceuticals, air freight from Delhi or Mumbai to Kabul is faster but priced per kilo.

How much does it cost to ship a container from India to Afghanistan?

Rates are per container and depend on the corridor, container size, destination city and current Iranian inland haulage. We quote each shipment individually with the sea leg, transit handling and road leg shown as separate lines — send your shipment details for a firm, itemised quote.

Do you handle the Afghan end, or just the shipping?

We handle both. Our Kabul and Herat offices manage Afghan import clearance and final delivery, so the corridor is covered from the Indian loading point to the consignee’s door.
